The Cross- the vertical represents a relationship with God and the horizontal signifies a relationship with one another.

Consider how the vertical relationship with God is not only an ethereal idea that lives in one’s mind; but to be a strong and effective force in one’s life, one’s spiritual relationship must be grounded deep within oneself, within one’s spirit; similar to a deep underground spring being a source of life in a desert land. The vertical plane’s importance can be explained in the Golden rule; a principle that illustrates the way we relate to each other is just as important as our relationship with God. In Matthew 5:37-40, Jesus said to him, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
